At FWU-KEH-LAI Banquet Hall in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, two cultures came together in one unforgettable celebration.
A wedding is more than a promise between two people—it is the moment when two families and two cultures begin a new journey together.
In this celebration, the groom, Viliam, came from Slovakia, while the bride, Claire, brought the warmth of Taiwanese traditions. Family and friends traveled from across the globe to witness their love and celebrate this meaningful day.
Against the joyful red backdrop of a traditional Taiwanese wedding banquet, the tea ceremony was beautifully woven into Slovak wedding customs. Guests were not just attending a wedding—they were experiencing a heartfelt cultural exchange, discovering each other’s traditions and stories along the way.
Among all the memorable moments, one tradition captured everyone’s attention: Breaking a Plate Together.

Breaking a Plate isn’t an Accident—It’s a Symbol of Facing Life Together
Three…
Two…
One…
GO!
As I counted down: Three… Two… One… GO!
Viliam and Claire smashed a ceramic plate onto the ground.
The sharp sound of the shattering plate surprised the guests for a brief moment before the room filled with laughter and applause. For many Taiwanese guests seeing this for the first time, one question naturally came to mind: “Why would a couple intentionally break a plate during their wedding?”
In Slovak culture, however, breaking a plate is far from an act of destruction. It is a meaningful wedding tradition filled with blessings.
The shattered plate represents an important truth about marriage: Life will never be free of challenges, disagreements, or unexpected moments. After the plate breaks, the newlyweds must pick up a broom and dustpan to clean up every piece together.
This simple act symbolizes their promise that no matter what life brings, they will face it side by side and solve problems as partners.

Seeing Marriage Through Broken Pieces: Shared Lives, Shared Challenges

The most touching part of the plate-breaking ceremony is that it doesn’t portray marriage as a perfect fairy tale. Instead, it gently reminds the couple that life will inevitably bring difficult moments—differences of opinion, unexpected changes, and unforeseen trials. What truly matters isn’t avoiding those moments, but choosing to face them together.
The broken plate is also believed to drive away bad luck and welcome a fresh start. As the couple carefully sweeps up every broken piece, they symbolically accept that every challenge in their married life will be shared.
Family members and children happily joined in, stepping on the shards to break them into smaller pieces, adding even more laughter and warmth to the celebration. These scattered fragments represent the hurdles life may bring. Marriage doesn’t promise a life without difficulties; it reminds us that every obstacle becomes easier when two people face it as one.
The act of cleaning the pieces also carries another beautiful blessing: throughout their marriage, the couple will never walk alone. Alongside one another, they will always have the love, encouragement, and support of family and friends.

The Role of a Bilingual Wedding Host: Connecting Hearts, Not Just Languages
A bilingual wedding host helps guests from different linguistic backgrounds fully understand and participate in every meaningful moment. That is exactly what makes an international wedding so beautiful—it creates a space where cultures can be shared, appreciated, and remembered together.
The true value of bilingual hosting is communicating the meaning behind the tradition.
When Taiwanese guests learned the story behind the plate-breaking ceremony, they weren’t simply watching a couple break pottery. They understood the profound promise behind it: “No matter what the future brings, we’ll face it together.”Likewise, when international guests experienced the Taiwanese tea ceremony, they discovered the deep respect, gratitude, and family values it represents.
Though languages may differ, blessings are always understood; though cultures vary, hearts are always connected.

Creating Shared Memories Through Cultural Experiences
Beyond the plate-breaking ceremony, the wedding featured interactive activities including sharing traditional candied fruit skewers (Tanghulu), a peanut-picking chopstick challenge, and a fun beer-drinking competition.
These lighthearted activities naturally encouraged guests from different countries to laugh, interact, and connect. After all, a truly memorable international wedding isn’t only about celebrating the love between two people—it’s about making every guest feel like they are a vital part of the story.

Thank you, Viliam and Claire, for showing us the beauty of love where cultures meet.
